Blogs Good. Comment Spam Bad.
By Craig Danuloff
It's sadly not surprising, to anyone that blogs, that Microsoft Research is reporting that 93% of all blog comments are spam. WebMetricsGuru breaks down a very interesting report on what the spammers are doing and how Microsoft thinks they can help stop them.

Craig,
I agree. Comment spam almost buckled RN more than once- sheer tidal wave.
Implementing CAPTCHA helped eliminate 98% of it.
In retrospect I would have setup some blogs differently.
I think the reason it is so easy to spam (e.g. Movable Type) is because everyone uses default settings and the spam software is setup to find those blogs. Best advice for a new setup is to change default directories, output, etc.

Wayne

I've tried several times to get the MovableType Captcha Plug in working, and haven't succeeded. I would have liked it if they could have built one into 3.3, but as with almost everything MT, its a disappointment.
